Management Accounting Jobs & Recruitment

Common job titles

Management Accountant, Senior/Group Management Accountant, Finance Business Partner

We've been helping New Zealand's Management Accountants & Finance Business Partners to find jobs throughout Auckland and Wellington's Accounting & Finance industry for more than 20 years. If you're an expert in Management Accounting or Business Partnering or a manager looking for one, we'd love to hear from you.

Entry requirements

Our clients often prefer Management Accounting candidates with a range of management accounting experience, with sound knowledge of New Zealand (NZ GAAP) and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). In many instances, holding a relevant business or accounting qualification, or studying towards or obtaining a full membership of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CAANZ), will be advantageous. Our clients also prefer candidates with strong written and verbal communication skills as these professionals regularly need to explain accounting and finance concepts to non-financial stakeholders.

Finance Business Partner candidates usually have at least five to ten years of accounting experience, preferably in a Financial or Management Accountant or similar position. Advisory experience, including partnering with business units and project teams to provide financial advice and solutions, are highly transferrable skills. High-calibre candidates are expected to have significant technical accounting skills in Enterprise systems such as SAP, Oracle, and MS Dynamics. Holding a CA/CPA qualification is also highly recommended

What could you be doing?

A Management Accountant’s role can be hugely varied and different from business to business. Usually reporting to the Financial Controller or Accounting/Finance Manager, these professionals are responsible for providing managers with relevant reports to assist in key decision making.

Typical day-to-day duties can include:

  • Preparation of and providing commentary on monthly management reports
  • Providing financial advice to business units
  • Providing analysis of actual results versus budgets and forecasts
  • Playing a lead role in compiling annual budgets
  • Training and managing junior accounting staff

The role of a Finance Business Partner is primarily to provide direction, advice, and solutions to other business leaders and partners to help the organisation implement strategies, navigate change and improve overall financial reporting and business performance. A Finance Business Partner will usually report directly to the Chief Executive or Financial Officer if they work within a small or medium-sized business. If the partner works for a larger organisaton, then they will likely report to a business unit manager, such as a Finance Manager or Director.

Typical day-to-day duties can include:

  • Provide guidance towards different business units during complex projects
  • Participate in the strategic development of business units
  • Budgeting/baseline reporting and updating
  • Collaborate effectively with a variety of managers and executives
  • Forecast expected business revenue
