Entry requirements

To secure a role as a Bookkeeper, you will have ideally worked with computer and accounting software packages and have strong experience in Microsoft Excel. Previous exposure to accounting practices will be necessary as you will need to have some understanding of work papers, financial statements, and the preparation of financial reports. Payroll is often an important part of a Bookkeeper role, so experience with New Zealand’s Payroll legislation may be required. Whilst it is not an essential requirement, many employers prefer candidates with tertiary education such as a bachelor’s degree or accounting technician.

Our clients often prefer Company Accountants who possess accounting experience usually obtained from an Assistant Accountant position for a small or medium-sized business. Whilst having full membership of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CAANZ) would boost employability, employers may also consider candidates currently studying towards membership. Successful candidates often possess strong accounting systems experience and advanced skills in Microsoft Excel.

What could you be doing?

Usually reporting to either a Senior Accountant or Finance Manager, a Bookkeeper's daily duties will be varied but may include:

  • Preparation of monthly accounts
  • End to end payroll
  • Reconciliation of cash books and managing cashflow forecasting
  • Accounts Receivable/Payable and Credit Control
  • Invoice preparation
  • Maintaining multiple spreadsheets
  • Other ad-hoc duties as required

A Company Accountant is usually employed by small-to-medium-sized businesses and is an all-round accounting support role. Depending on the size of the organisation, Company Accountants often report to the Directors and/or CEO.

Typical day-to-day duties may include:

  • Managing the day-to-day accounting function
  • Reconciling business accounts and preparing monthly/yearly reports
  • Providing Accounts Payable/Receivable support
  • Liaising with external accounting, tax, and payroll partners
  • Supervising other accounting staff


Experienced Bookkeepers often have opportunities to further develop their careers, and in many cases move into sole charge accounting positions.

After several years’ working as a Company Accountant, you may expect to move into a more senior accounting or management position.

Who makes a great Bookkeeper/Company Accountant?

People with several years’ experience in accounts assistance or administration as well as New Zealand payroll can often be suitable for Bookkeeper positions. For Company Accountant roles, our clients prefer candidates with a CA or CPA qualification or an Accountant who has nearly finished their chartered qualification, and has a solid understanding of modern financial systems, budgeting, and forecasting. You will also need to be enthusiastic and an excellent communicator, have a keen eye for detail, and the ability to juggle workloads and deadlines without breaking a sweat.
